It is truly a mystery on who could leave Charleston with the Class1A Boys Championship trophy on Saturday afternoon. There are eight teams that could win this title led by Forreston and Salt Fork.

The event to watch meet happens early as Erie’s Kyle Kruthoff looks to defend his state championship in the Pole Vault against a strong field. Kruthoff could get close to 17-feet in this meet.

Here are previews of the 18 Class 1A events as well as a look at some of the top teams. The Class 1A Meet begins Thursday morning with their preliminary session.

TRACK EVENTS

8:06.22 – Tremont

2018 1A State Meet Champion

8:00.59 – *Morrison

Preview – Morrison ran away with last year’s state title using four sophomores. The addition of freshman Hunter Newman to leaders Keegan Anderson and Koby Brackemeyer make Morrison tough to beat. We could see a winning time under 7:55 from this team. Morrison stamped their favorites roll when they easily won at Illinois Top Times in March.

Tremont had the top sectional time last week and could be one of the quartets to challenge Morrison. Deer Creek-Mackinaw finished right behind Tremont at the Lewistown Sectional and will also challenge. Northridge Prep has an 8:11.62 season’s best and could play a factor in the outcome of the finals. Elmwood, Pleasant Plains, Williamsville, Erie, Illini West, and Rushville-Industry could all be teams to watch in the finals.

4x100 METER RELAY

IHSA State Meet Record

41.12 – Cahokia - 2015

2019 State Best

41.12 – Crete-Monee

2019 Class 1A Sectional Best

43.11 - Pana

2018 1A State Meet Champion

Preview – This relay will be tough to predict. The top four qualifying teams are all within two tenths of each other making this event fun to watch. Pana ran the lead 43.11 to win at Sullivan last week behind a strong anchor from Cody Klein. The next three teams are only separated by four hundredths of a second led by DuQuoin with Dasani Edward and Shamar Adams leading the group. Rushville-Industry has an ace anchoring with Chary Tshibuabua and could win this event. Spring Valley Hall, led by Marshall Walk and Steven Brust,  have the athletes to also win.

Forreston, St. Joseph-Ogden, Illini West, and Camp Point Central could be some of the teams that you could see in the finals on Saturday.

Preview – The final in last year’s race was memorable with John McNabola outkicking Logan Hall for the title. The top three finishers of last year’s race have graduated opening this race up somewhat. Christopher Collet is having a strong senior campaign winning a state title at Detweiller Park in the fall. He should be the runner to watch in this race as he has the fastest class 1A time by close to15 seconds.

Negus Bogard of Robinson just missed the second section of this race by less than two seconds. We could see a fast time from him in Section 1 as he goes after an all-state finish.

Caelin Foley of Galva ran 9:39.14 at Palatine in April and could be a threat to Collet. Lucas Chittick of Fisher and Tristan Olpin of Keith County Day are10 seconds behind Foley and will also challenge for a top three finish. Miles Sheppard of Warsaw pushed the pace at this distance indoors at Illinois Top Times and could be a difference maker on Saturday.

Brian Walsh of Northridge Prep, Aryan Lalwani of Urbana University, Noah Smith of El Paso-Gridley, Spencer Mauch of Sterling Newman, and Isaiah Ditta of Clifton Central are some of the runners you could see in the front of Section 2.

Aidan Laughery has top Class 1A time this season by a tenth of a second over the rest of the field. Adam Snedden as well as Marshall Walk of Spring Valley Hall were the only runners under 11-seconds in sectional meets.

Charly Tshibuabua of Rushville-Industry could be among the tops in this event as he was all-state in this race last year. Makail Stanley of Argenta-Oreana could be hot Class 1A sprinter in this meet. Stanley qualified in all three events and could win all of them. Cody Klein of Pana has run under 11 seconds this year and could threaten for the state title. Brady Webb of Forreston, Steven Brust of Spring Valley Hall, and Charles Stamps Jr. of Walther Christian will be some of the other athletes to keep an eye on.

Dawson Rogers of Salt Fork was all-state in this race last year and could be Yamco’s chief competition. Morrison’s Hunter Newman and Koby Brackemeyer, along with Jacob Landon of Carlinville, Noah McIntyre of Athens, Cayden Shelton of Forreston, and Boston Stewart of St. Teresa all have the talent and times to go after the state title.

Preview – There were no teams that went under 1:31 in sectional meets. St. Joseph-Ogden and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley share the top spot. Gibson City, with Aidan Laughery anchoring, ran the Class 1A seasonal lead in their conference meet three weeks ago and could have the advantage now with defending champion Colfax-Ridgeview not qualifying.

Forreston will be looking for team points and could place high in this event. Maroa-Forsyth, Spring Valley Hall, Pana, Camp Point Central, and DuQuoin all have teams that could come away with the state titles.

400 METER DASH

48.91 – Samuel Herenton (SR), Chicago Providence St. Mel

2018 1A State Meet Champion

Preview – This could be a great event with seven Class 1A runners all under 50-seconds.  Samuel Herenton has been the hot runner running under 49 seconds with 48.81 his best two weeks ago at Lane Tech. Makail Stanley of Argenta-Oreana ran 49.21 two days later at the News-Gazette Honor Roll Meet and could go under 49 seconds this weekend. Stanley finished second last year. Defending champion Charly Tshibuabua seems to be peaking at the right time running 49.36 in his sectional race. Keegan Anderson of Morrison has the same best as Tshibuabua and will also be right in the front.

Greg Downs of Auburn was all-state last year and will be a threat in this race. Jared Beyers of Pana, Noah Woods of Tuscola, and Boston Stewart of St. Teresa will be runners to watch for. Stewart will be doubling back from the 800 Meter Run.

300 METER HURDLES

IHSA State Meet Record

2019 Class 1A Sectional Best

38.54 – Mason Barr (SR), Colfax-Ridgeview

2018 1A State Meet Champion

37.97 – AJ Christensen, Forreston-Polo

Preview – This is the event that Mason Barr did not check in on time for in the prelims and missed running the preliminary race. That memory could drive him to big things in this event. It could become a two athlete race as Barr has top sectional time by three tenths of a second ahead of Salt Fork’s Caine Wilson. Chandler Ellis of Winnebago is only other Class 1A runner that has run under 40 seconds this season. These are the three  athletes that you should keep an eye on.

Some of the other athletes to watch for include Shamar Adams of DuQuoin, Cody Thole of Princeville, Jayden Kempel of Pearl City, and Stetson Lappin of Pinckneyville.

Keep an eye on Noah McIntyre of Athens. The junior used a strong kick in a tactical race to win at Illinois Top Times in March. McIntyre also is entered in the 800 Meter Run. Another tactical race could play in McIntyre’s advantage.

There are up to12 athletes that could challenge for a top five finish. Some of the runners to watch for include Tyler Guthrie of Father McGivney, Lucas Chittick of Fisher, Colby Johnson of Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Gabe Martinez of Bismarck-Henning, and Henry Kraatz of Urbana University.

Preview – Morrison has a sectional time that is more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Forreston, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, Sherrard, Pleasant Plains, and St. Thomas More are some of the teams that could challenge Morrison for the state championship.

TEAMS

The injury of Tate Walcott before his sectional meet took 2018 Class 1A State Champion Colfax-Ridgeview out of contention to defend their title. It opens up the team race immensely. There are as many as eight schools to walk away from Charleston with the Class 1A championship trophy.

Here is a look at 10 of the teams to keep an eye on beginning Thursday morning with the Class 1A Preliminary Session.

Forreston

1st – Lena-Winslow Sectional

Qualifiers – 13 Total (10 Individuals, 3 Relays)

Notes – A serious threat to contend for a state trophy. Forreston has the strength in the relays. They could contend for the title in the 1600 Meter Relay and score big points in the 400 Meter Relay and 800 Meter Relay. Brady Webb will be a key athlete this weekend for this team. The senior will in their two sprint relays. He will be among the top athletes in the Long Jump and could also score points in the 100 Meter Dash. Jace Coffey has the second longest throw in Class 1A in the Discus. He could challenge for a state championship. Cayden Shelton could earn all-state honors in the 800 Meter Run.

Caitlin Salt Fork

1st – St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional

Qualifiers – 10 Total (8 Individuals, 2 Relays)

Notes – Perhaps the door opened the most for Salt Fork in their chances to win the team title. Caine Wilson could be scoring the bulk of his team’s points this weekend. Wilson will be one of the favorites in both the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles. He is tied for the top time in the 200 Meter Dash and could win the event. Dawson Rogers should be one of the top five runners in the 800 Meter Run.  Rogers will also be a big help in the 1600 Meter Relay. Payton Taylor should score points in both the Shot Put and the Discus. Clayton Jarling could be a surprise in the High Jump.

Morrison

1st – Sherrard Sectional

Qualifiers – 6 Total (3 Individuals,3 Relays)

Notes – After their showing at Illinois Top Times in March where they swept all three relays, Morrison will be a team to keep an eye on. Morrison has six qualifiers, so they do not have any room for mistakes. Their 3200 Meter Relay squad returns all from their state championship of last year and should be the favorite in the event. Their 1600 Relay quartet has the fastest sectional time by three seconds and will also be the favorite in that event. Their 800 Meter Relay squad is in the middle of the sectional pack but could make the finals. Keegan Anderson has one of the top times in the 400 Meter Dash and should get some big points for his team. Freshman Hunter Newman has come on strong in the 800 Meter Run and should get his team some big points in the event along with teammate Koby Brackemeyer.

Pleasant Plains

1st- Beardstown Sectional

Qualifiers – 15 Total (12 Individuals, 3 Relays)

Notes – The Cardinals have the numbers to win the team title. It could be their strength in the relays that could make the difference. Their 3200 Meter Relay has one of the top five sectional times and will be a factor in the event. Their 1600 Meter Relay team is in the same boat as 3200 squad. They could get some big points. Tristen Tewes has the top sectional mark in the High Jump and could contend for the title. Tewes could also place in the Long Jump. Keep an eye on Chase Schmitt as he could place in both the Shot Put and Discus. Michael Scott could contend for points in the 400 Meter Dash. Keigan Halford could get bonus points in both the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles.

Rushville-Industry

3rd – Beardstown Sectional

Qualifiers – 8 Total (5 Individuals, 3 Relays)

Notes – The Rockets don’t have the numbers that other teams in this meet have. They do have that individual that could carry them to a team championship. Charly Tshibuabua won the 400 Meter Dash in last year’s meet and earned all-state honors in three other events. He again will be a big difference maker on Saturday. Their 400 Meter Relay with Tshibuabua in there is one of the top five teams and will contend for the event title. Kreeden Allen will be in that relay. He could also score points in the Long Jump. Their team in the 3200 Meter Relay could also pick up points.

Carthage Illini West

2nd – Beardstown Sectional

Qualifiers – 9 Total (5 Individuals, 4 Relays)

Notes – A team that was not expected to be in this position after losing Connor Artman and Jacob Bryan to graduation, yet here they are back in a position to contend for a trophy. Colton Sargeant could contend for points in both the 100 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash. Bryce Payne could be a surprise in the Long Jump. It could be passing the baton successfully around the track that could get the Chargers into the top three. Their 400 Meter Relay and 1600 Meter Relay will go after big points. They could also score in the 3200 Meter Relay.

DuQuoin

1st – DuQuoin Sectional

Qualifiers – 16 Total (12 Individuals, 4 Relays)

Notes – Could the DuQuoin Boys team replicate what the Girls team accomplished the week before on this same big blue oval? Dasani Edward has the top sectional mark in the Long Jump and will be one of the favorites in the event. Edward could also get points in the Triple Jump. Shamar Adams will help in the relays. He should finish in the top nine in both the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles. Their team in the 400 Meter Relay will be one of the event favorites. Their 800 Meter Relay could also make the Saturday finals.

Tremont

2nd – Lewistown Sectional

Qualifiers – 9 Total (6 Individuals, 3 Relays)

Notes – The Turks’ chances for a trophy starts in the 3200 Meter Relay where they have the top sectional time. Tremont could also get big points in the 1600 Meter Relay. Colton Polhemus has a good possibility of placing in the Long Jump and 100 Meter Dash. Leland Sumer could also score in the 1600 Meter Run.

Williamsville

3rd – Lewistown Sectional

Qualifiers – 9 Total (6 Individuals, 3 Relays)

Notes – There is not much room for mistakes for the Bullets if they want to chase after a trophy. Their 3200 Meter Relay should make the Saturday finals and could contend for points. Cameron Witts has one of the top marks in the Pole Vault and will be one of the favorites. Bradley Olyslav has one of the top three Class 1A performances and will contend for the state title. He is in the same position in the Discus. Watch also for big points from him in that event.

Pana

1st – Sullivan Sectional

Qualifiers – 9 Total (7 Individuals, 2 Relays)

Notes – The Panthers could be a surprise for a top five finish. Their team in the 400 Meter Relay has the top sectional time and will challenge for the state title. Their 800 Meter Relay could also advance to the finals on Saturday. Cody Klein could score in both the 100 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash. Jared Beyers could be among the top five finishers in the 400 Meter Dash. It would be a bonus if he qualifies for the finals of the 200 Meter Dash. Wes Kile is one of the top eight Class 1A athletes in the Pole Vault and should get his team big points.
